Northwest Arkansas can demonstrate its commitment to the planet’s environment and sustainability on March 28th beginning at 8:30 pm local time.
More than a billion people and 1,000 cities around the globe are expected to turn their lights off for Earth Hour 2009 on Saturday in a collective call to combat climate change.
Just two years ago, when the first Earth Hour took place in Sydney, Australia, about two million people went dark to show their support for action on climate change. That single hour reduced power consumption in Sydney by 10 per cent and reduced carbon dioxide emissions by some 25,000 tons.
In 2008, the symbolic 60 minutes of darkness exploded into a global movement when the number of participants topped 50 million and 371 cities dimmed their lights. Such global landmarks as billboards in Times Square and the Coliseum in Rome went dark.
This year, the anticipated growth rate of the event organized by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) is 2,000 per cent since March 2008.
Go ahead Northwest Arkansas, turn out the lights and prove that you really do want to be “Green Valley”.
